WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis program received mixed results during its first full day of competition at the William & Mary Invitational and University of Tennessee-based St. Mary's Classic.

The four Boilermakers who were dispatched to Williamsburg, Va., experienced a great first day, while the women who ventured to Rocky Top did not.

Flight A Singles at William & Mary featured No. 75 Randi Schuler splitting the first two sets against No. 61 Katarina Zoricic, before Zoricic was forced to retire. Schuler's next opponent will be Old Dominion's Charleen Haaroff, who upset No. 3 Inga Beermann of Virginia Tech, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Elsewhere in Flight A, No. 92 Mallory Voelker went to three sets against No. 113 Yulia Rivelis of Penn, winning 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3. Voelker will play No. 27 Jenna Long of UNC in the quarterfinals Saturday at noon.

If Schuler and Voelker both win their quarterfinal matches, the Boilermaker sophomores will face each other in the semifinals Saturday at 3:30.

Freshman Neela Vaez also made it though to the second round after beating JJ Larson of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-1; however Brooke Beier, did not have enough to beat W&M's Klaudyna Kasztelaniec, losing, 6-0, 0-6, 7-5. Beier's next match is in the consolation bracket against Pamela Duran of Richmond.

Both Boilermaker doubles teams (Voelker/Vaez and Beier/Schuler) won their first-round matches. The Double V tandem beat Va. Tech's Larson/Beermann, 8-6, and Beier/Schuler sent Duran/Vosters of Richmond to the consolation round following their 8-2 triumph.

The Tennessee Four did not experience the same degree of success, as all four singles players and two doubles teams lost in the first round.

Cigdem Duru, Anna Dzeva, Alejandra Boeker and Whitney Reys all lost in straight sets Friday, but could finish strong in the consolation rounds.

Updated brackets of all flights can be found at each school's respective athletics web site, utladyvols.com (Tennessee) and tribeathletics.com (William & Mary).
