ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Dan Sattler limited the best hitting team in the Big Ten Conference to one run and six hits over 9.0 innings, but it wasn't enough as the Purdue Boilermakers fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes 2-1 in 12 innings in Wednesday's opening-round action at the 2006 Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Sattler retired the last 13 batters he faced, and 20 and his last 23, but the Boilermakers only managed one run off OSU starter Dan DeLucia in 10 innings.
The winning run for the Buckeyes scored in the bottom of the 12th on a single to left by Jedidiah Stephen, a base hit that plated Matt Angle from third base. Angle led off the inning with a double to left-center, the only extra-base hit of the day for OSU.
Trae Dauby (4-6) was hit with the loss, pitching 2.0 innings in relief and yielding one run on two hits.
The Purdue run was scored in the fourth on a double by Eric Osborn, scoring John Hunter from third base. OSU scored the game's initial run in the second inning on an RBI single by Jason Zoeller.
Purdue now slides to the elimination game on Thursday against Illinois, an 8-1 loser on Wednesday to Minnesota. The Boilermakers and Illini take the field at Ray Fisher Stadium for a noon first pitch. The game can be heard in the Lafayette area on WLAS AM 1410 and on the web at www.purduesports.com.
