WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team lost its second consecutive match Saturday afternoon when it fell to No. 35 Michigan by a score of 7-0. Played at the Lafayette Sports Center, the match gives the Boilermakers a record of 6-11 overall with a 1-4 mark in Big Ten competition.
Purdue lost the doubles point to a strong Michigan team. At the No. 1 spot, the duo of senior Colin Foster and junior Scott Warner lost to Matko Maravic and Brian Hung 8-1. At the No. 2 position, junior Eric Hodgman and freshman Kelubia Mabatah were defeated 8-3 by Ryan Heller and Andrew Mazlin. Finishing up the doubles play for the afternoon was the freshman duo of Jose Fuenmayor and Patrick Rose. They fell to Peter Aarts and Scott Bruckman 8-5.
Singles play did not get any better for the Boilermakers as the Wolverines swept all six singles matches. The lone singles match that went into three sets was between Hodgman and Mazlin. Mazlin took the victory by a score of 6-7, 7-5, 10-8.
Purdue head coach Tim Madden was not happy with his team's play in doubles.
"Our doubles play today was unacceptable," said Madden. "We did not come out this afternoon ready to play and it really showed. I will be looking for a much better start tomorrow afternoon against Michigan State. If we compete in doubles the way we are capable of competing, then results will show."
Purdue resumes play tomorrow against Michigan State. Weather permitting; the match will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
