WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 2006 season came to an end for the Purdue men's tennis team Thursday, when the Boilermakers dropped a 4-1 decision to Wisconsin in a Big Ten Championships first-round match in Minneapolis. Purdue finished the campaign with an 8-15 overall record. Wisconsin, now 11-11, advanced to a Friday quarterfinal contest with top-seeded Ohio State.
Purdue, the No. 9 seed in the tournament, fell behind to the eighth-seeded Badgers by surrendering the doubles point with losses at No. 1 and No. 2.
The Boilermakers recorded just one singles win, as junior Eric Hodgman he defeated Brennen Phippen 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3. Wisconsin took matches at Nos. 1, 2, and 6 in straight sets. Matches at No. 4 and No. 5 were abandoned once the Badgers secured the majority of points necessary for the team victory.
Purdue senior Colin Foster finished his career Thursday. Junior Jarred Leibner, who will graduate in May, also completed his career as a Boilermaker against the Badgers.
Purdue will return eight letterwinners from the 2005-06 squad, and also will get back the services of Paul Rose. The senior, who was an All-Big Ten player as a sophomore, received a medical redshirt for this past season, and will have a fifth year of eligibility to complete in 2006-07.
