WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Minnesota spoiled the Purdue men's tennis team's final home contest of the 2006 season with a 7-0 victory over the Boilermakers at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Sunday. The 37th-ranked Golden Gophers improved to 13-11 overall and 7-3 in the Big Ten with the win, while Purdue dropped to 8-14 and 3-7. Purdue finished its season with a 7-4 home record.
Coming off a 4-3 win over Iowa on Saturday, the Boilermakers looked poised to give Minnesota a challenge. In doubles, junior Scott Warner and freshman Jose Fuenmayor came through with an 8-4 win over Raoul Schwark and Mikey Kantar at No. 3. Minnesota then won at No. 1, and all eyes turned to court No. 2.
In the deciding match for the doubles point, junior Eric Hodgman and freshman Griffin Nienberg led 7-6, but Nic Edlefsen and Sion Wilkins fought back from the brink of defeat to post a 9-7 victory.
Minnesota swept through singles, winning all six matches. The Boilermakers did not surrender easily, however. Three of the singles matches went to three sets. In the three matches decided in two sets, five of the six sets finished as 7-5 or 7-6 scores.
Purdue will return to the court Thursday, when it begins competition at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis. Tournament seeds will be known later Sunday.
