BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A three-run first inning propelled the Boilermakers to a 5-2 win over Indiana in the second game of a Big Ten twinbill, giving Purdue a split of the Saturday doubleheader at Sembower Field. The Hoosiers won game one of the set by a 3-2 score.

Purdue is now 19-11 overall and 6-5 in the Big Ten Conference, and will look to secure a series split on Sunday in the finale vs. Indiana (12-19, 4-7).

Mitch Hilligoss, who was held hitless in the first two games of the series, exploded for four hits in the Saturday nightcap, including a single in the opening at-bat of the game which led to Purdue's first run. An RBI single by John Hunter gave the Boilermakers a 1-0 lead, an advantage that moved to 3-0 before the end of the frame after doubles by Ryne White and Neal Gorka.

Indiana struck for a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Josh Richardson, but the Boilermakers got the run right back in the visitor's second.

Jordan Comadena reached base on an error by Richardson to lead off the second inning, and scored two batters later on a single by Hilligoss.

Hilligoss went 4-4 in the game with two runs scored and an RBI. The junior shortstop doubled, tripled and stole a base during the contest.

The Boilermakers extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning when Hilligoss doubled down the right field line with one out and scored on a two-out two-bagger to left-center by Eric Wolfe.

IU pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth, but squandered a golden opportunity when they loaded the bases with one down and only scored the lone run. Purdue starting pitcher Brent Coudron coaxed centerfielder Reggie Watson to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play, moving the game to the sixth with the Boilermakers up by three.

In the sixth, Purdue closer Chris Toneguzzi came into the game with two outs and the tying run at the plate, and blew a fastball by IU pinch-hitter Tad Reida to end the threat. Toneguzzi would pitch a scoreless seventh for his second save of the season.

Coudron (3-3) picked up the win, moving his record to 3-3 on the season. The senior southpaw limited IU to four hits and two runs in 6.2 innings.

In game one of the afternoon twinbill, the Hoosiers scored a run in the first and second innings, and pushed across the winning tally in the in the fifth as IU defeated Purdue 3-2.

After the Hoosiers took the initial 1-0 lead in the opening frame, Purdue responded with back-to-back doubles by Jeff Mojzik and Jordan Comadena to tie the game.

Comadena has recorded seven doubles this season out of a total of 11 base hits.

Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning, Purdue loaded the bases with no one out on a walk to Hilligoss and consecutive singles by Eric Wolfe and Hunter. However, IU relievers Joe Vicini and Chris McCombs were able to get out of the jam while surrendering just one run to preserve the lead and the win.

Dan Sattler pitched a complete game in the defeat, allowing two earned run in six innings of work. Sattler is now 3-4 on the season.

Purdue and Indiana are set to meet for the series finale at 1 p.m. at Sembower Field on the IU campus.
