ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Purdue was unable to extend its winning streak to six, falling to Saint Louis 6-5 on a late-inning comeback at the Billikens Sports Center.
Purdue lost a 5-2 lead late in the game when the Billikens scored two runs in each the seventh and eighth inning.
Trailing in the seventh 2-1, the Boilermakers scored four times to seemingly get the game in control. An RBI single by Spencer Ingaldson scored Dane Wolfe with the tying run, and Eric Wolfe drove his second home run of the season over the fence in right for a three-run shot, giving Purdue a 5-2 lead.
SLU closed the gap to one in the home half of the seventh on an RBI triple by Ziggy Moore and a ground ball by Ryan Crespi that plated Moore.
Purdue surrendered the lead the following inning on RBI base hits by Gilbert Marlowe and Bill Musselman.
The loss for Purdue (8-5) went to reliever Trae Dauby, who yielded four runs in 1.1 innings out of the pen. Dauby allowed four hits and struck out two in his seventh appearance of the year.
For the Billikens, the win went to Etienne Ratte-Delorme after the reliever held the Boilermakers hitless over the last 2.2 innings.
Purdue gained the initial lead of the contest on a single left-center by Ingaldson, which scored Dane Wolfe from second. Wolfe led of the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mitch Hilligoss.
Ingaldson went 3-5 at the plate on Sunday, scoring one run and driving in two.
Saint Louis tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Tom Pinnell and took its first lead the following inning on a run-scoring single by Marlowe.
Purdue starter Ricky Heines did not get a decision after pitching six innings of four-hit baseball, allowing two runs and two walks while striking out six.
Purdue returns to the State of Indiana for a road non-conference game in Terre Haute on Wednesday. The Boilermakers will take on Indiana State at 3 p.m., and the game will be broadcast via the internet at www.purduesports.com, with Mark Leddy and Chris Macaluso on the call.
