WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team upset No. 41 Harvard 4-3 on Saturday at the Lafayette Sports Center. The win makes the Boilermakers 3-0 on the season and gives Harvard a record of 0-1.
Purdue came out strong winning the doubles point. Eric Hodgman and Patrick Rose won their match at the No. 1 spot defeating Sasha Ermakov and Brandon Chiu of Harvard 9-8(4). Also winning their doubles match was the No. 3 duo of Colin Foster and Scott Warner. They defeated Dan Nguyen and Scott Denenberg 8-6.
Posting singles wins for the Boilermakers were Foster, Rose and Kelubia Mabatah. The winning point was decided in the final match between Mabatah and Dan Nguyen with Mabatah claiming victory 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3.
Purdue head coach Tim Madden was extremely proud of his players today.
"It seems like in practice, we have everything in line and we're doing everything correctly," says Madden. "We're a young team and it's hard to tell how we're going to compete in match play. I was extremely happy and proud that we were able to carry over our performance from practice to match play today."
The Boilermakers will resume their spring season tomorrow at the Lafayette Sports Center when they take on in-state opponent Butler. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
