EAST LANSING, Mich. - Purdue was unable to grab its first Big Ten win, falling to Michigan State in Jenison Field House 22-11.The Boilermakers won at 133, 184, and 197, but could not crack through a few tight matches that sent the dual in the favor of the Spartans, snapping a two-year winning streak in the series for Purdue.
Michigan State opened with two tight wins and a major decision. Tony Greathouse defeated Jake Murphy 4-2 at 157 and Greg Goidosik scored a takedown in the second sudden victory period to defeat Dan Bedoy 5-3. R.J. Boudro's 13-4 major decision over Barry Jackson at 174 made the score 10-0 Spartans
Purdue jumped on the board convincingly at 184 with a 15-5 major decision by Ben Wissel over John Murphy. Wissel, ranked third in the country, scored three first-period takedowns, building a 6-2 lead after three minutes. A reversal in the second period gave Wissel an 8-2 lead, and three more takedowns in the final stanza iced the win, moving Wissel to 29-2 this season, 5-0 in Big Ten duals.
The Boilermakers drew to within three points with a 3-1 sudden victory decision at 197 by Nathan Moore over Jeff Clemens. The two grapplers traded escapes in regulation before Moore, the 20th-ranked 197-pounder, posted a quick overtime takedown for the win, his 27th of the year.
Purdue lost a heartbreaker at heavyweight when Max Lossen took a 5-3 decision over Aaron Keough. Trailing by one late in the third period, Keough made an offensive flurry and forced a stalling call on Lossen, tying the score at 3-3 with the penalty point. However, Lossen rallied back for a takedown in the final 10 seconds for the win.
A hard battle at 125 went the way of MSU's Nick Simmons, ranked fourth in the nation. Brandon Tucker scored the first takedown and had a second-period reversal, but trailed after two periods 8-4. Simmons score a riding time point after a scoreless third for the five-point win, 9-4.
Purdue claimed its final win of the day at 133 when Chris Fleeger defeated Jeff Wimberly by 16-3 major decision. Two takedowns and six back points in the first period gave Fleeger, ranked fifth in the nation, a 10-1 lead after three minutes. A final takedown and another turn of Wimberly gave Fleeger the 13-point victory.
A tight fight at 141 saw Andy Simmons, ranked fourth in the country, defeat Jake Patacsil 4-2. MSU claimed the final match of the evening with a 13-6 win by Darren McKnight over Doug Withstandley.
Purdue, now 8-8 on the year and 0-5 in Big Ten duals, returns home for a 1 p.m. dual on Sunday, Feb. 5, vs. the Michigan Wolverines.
