WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team defeated Indiana Sunday at the Lafayette Sports Center 5-2. The win gives the Boilermakers their first victory since defeating Butler Feb. 5 and snaps a five-match losing streak.
Purdue took the doubles point, winning two of three matches. At the No. 2 spot, freshman Kelubia Mabatah and junior Scott Warner defeated David Bubenicek and Peter Antons 9-8. Also getting a win in doubles at the No. 3 position for the Boilermakers was senior Colin Foster and freshman Kurt Zaske. They defeated Mak Kendall and Michael McCarthy 8-2.
In singles play, Purdue continued strong in winning four of the six matches for the day. Getting wins in singles were Foster, Mabatah and juniors Eric Hodgman and Jarred Leibner.
Purdue head coach Tim Madden was more satisfied with the team's performance.
"This was a much needed win," says Madden. "Our theme this week was mental toughness. The difference today was that from start to finish, we were mentally tougher than Indiana. Yesterday against Penn State it wasn't there, but today it was and it was the reason we won."
Purdue continues its season next week when it heads to Champaign, Il. to take on the 3rd-ranked Illini from Illinois. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
