WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team dropped its match Saturday afternoon to No. 60 Penn State by a 7-0 decision. After beginning the season, 4-0, the Boilermakers have now lost their fifth straight match.
In doubles play at the No. 2 spot, Boilermaker junior Scott Warner and freshman Kelubia Mabatah were the closest to winning their match, but lost in the tie-breaker by a score of 8-7.
Despite losing all six singles matches, the Boilermakers did manage to keep it close by sending four of six matches to be decided by a tie-breaker.
Purdue head coach Tim Madden had mixed emotions about the play of his team.
"First of all, there are a few guys that need to bump their play up 10 percent," says Madden. "If they do that, then it will enable us to win the close matches that we lost today. Secondly, we lost to a very good Penn State team today that was just more mentally tough than we were. Finally, I want to give credit to our top two singles players, Colin Foster and Patrick Rose. They played great today and some of our other guys need to watch and learn from them. Once they do that, we will be in the position we want."
Purdue looks to end its losing streak when it faces No. 69 Indiana on Sunday. The match will be held at the Lafayette Sports Center and will begin at 11. a.m.
