WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After getting out to a 4-0 start on the young season, the Purdue men's tennis team suffered its first defeat Saturday in South Bend. The 66th-ranked Boilermakers dropped to 4-1 with a 6-1 loss at No. 28 Notre Dame (3-4).

The Fighting Irish won the doubles point, and went on to post five wins in six singles matches. Freshman Kurt Zaske provided the lone Boilermaker singles victory, a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Patrick Buchanan at No. 6.

Junior Eric Hodgman and freshman Patrick Rose won 8-5 over Ryan Keckley and Barry King at No. 1 doubles.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden was disappointed in his Boilermakers' doubles play, but was pleased with their effort in singles.

"Our doubles play needs a lot of improvement and we are trying to rectify the situation," Madden said. "In singles, Notre Dame was just better. Even though we came up short, we competed very well."

Purdue will have a chance to get back in the win column Sunday, when they play at Western Michigan at noon.
