GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The Boilermakers were hampered by slow starts in the first two duals at the Lone Star Duals, falling to Navy and rebounding to win over Cal State-Fullerton.
Purdue fell to the Midshipmen, 25-12, after falling behind 13-0 after three matches. Wins by Ben Wissel (184), Nathan Moore (197), Jason Cook (141) and Doug Withstandley (149) were not enough to come back for a win.
The loss in Texas marked the third consecutive dual Purdue had dropped at the Lone Star Duals, having lost to Cornell and Oklahoma last season.
In their second dual of the day, the Boilermakers again started slow off the whistle, falling behind 10-0 after the first three matches. This time, however, Purdue was able to fight all the way back for the win, thanks to three pins and a forfeit.
Trailing 10-0, Wissl posted a win and was followed by a Fullerton forfeit a 197 awarded to Barry Jackson. Moore wrestled up a weight and proved up to the challenge, pinning Matt Methling at 6:39.
Brandon Tucker (125) followed with a pin of his own, sticking Curtis Schurkamp at the 5:57 mark. A loss at 133 moved the score to 21-14 in favor of the Boilermakers, and sent Jake Patacsil (141) to the mat. Patacsil came through in his first action since Dec. 4 with a stick of Teddy Astorga in the second period. The fall at 4:04 was the second of the year for the freshman.
Purdue returns to the mat after a session break, wrestling Northern Colorado at 4 p.m. and Brown two hours later. Purdue is 5-1 in dual action this season.
All duals at the Lone Star Duals begin at 157 pounds.
