WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team got its season off to a good start Sunday, beating Valparaiso in its first contest of the season. The Boilermakers defeated the Crusaders 6-1 at the Lafayette Sports Center in the first match of a doubleheader.

Despite losing the doubles point, Purdue came back strong in singles, winning all six matches. Freshman P.J. Rose kicked things off with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mike Shideler at No. 3. Next to win was junior Matt Zollman at No. 5, followed by rookie Griffin Nienberg at No. 6. Junior Eric Hodgman delivered the clinching victory at No. 2, with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Joe Venegas.

Purdue was set to finish the day with a 3 p.m. match against Toledo, also at the Lafayette Sports Center.
