WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Chris Lutz scored 18 points to lead Purdue to a 79-69 win over Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne Tuesday night.
The Boilermakers (5-4) didn't win their fifth game last season until Jan. 30 and never went above .500 during a 7-21 season. The Boilermakers improved to 5-0 at home and put two victories together for the second time this season.
Kyle Savely led IPFW (2-8) with 17 points.
Purdue led by as many as 22 points in the first half, but saw its lead trimmed to seven in the second half before Lutz hit a 3-pointer with 4:41 left. The Boilermakers maintained control from there.
The Mastodons didn't score during the first five minutes of the game on their way to 25 percent shooting in the first half. Purdue shot 54 percent from the field in building a 43-26 halftime lead.
DeWitt Scott, IPFW's leading scorer at 15 points per game, was held scoreless in the first half and finished with 10 points.
Purdue outrebounded the Mastodons 43-26 and outscored IPFW 24-16 from the free-throw line.
Korey Spates scored 14 points and Nate Minnoy had 12 points and nine rebounds for Purdue. Tyler Best had 15 points and Quintin Carouthers 14 for IPFW.
