WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's swimming and diving teams both throttled Notre Dame Saturday at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Boilermakers' 15th-ranked men's team downed the No. 19 Fighting Irish, 182-118, and the women's squad won, 172-128.
Diving was a major key to Purdue's success, as both of coach Adam Soldati's crews combined to outscore the Irish, 62-14. Junior Steve LoBue won off both springboards, posting a new varsity record of 337.05 points off the 1-meter and total of 347.18 points off the 3-meter. Josh Karshen, the reigning Big Ten Diver of the Week, was the runner-up off both boards, scoring 298.20 and 325.73 points.
Three-time All-American Carrie McCambridge moved to 4-0 on the season after winning both 1- and 3-meter titles with relative ease. The senior broke Kara Hajek-Gustafson's varsity record (323.75) and Notre Dame's Meghan Perry-Eaton's pool record (327.40) with her six-dive score of 339.60 points. McCambridge's previous best in this event was 312.10 points.
McCambridge's winning 1-meter score equaled 300.07 points. Junior Amanda Miller was second off each springboard, while newcomer Emily Wetzel placed third off the 1-meter and redshirt freshman Lauren Hallyburton was third off the 3-meter.
Varsity records also were broken in the Doris Z. Holloway pool. Senior Erica Chandler continued her hot streak, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:47.81, breaking her own previous mark of 1:48.50, which was set in 2004. Chandler also won the 500 free with an NCAA provisional cut of 4:50.36.
All-American Giordan Pogioli led all Boilermakers with three individual victories, taking first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 400 individual medley. Pogioli won the 100 with an NCAA provisional cut of 55.40, the 200 in 2:03.42, and the 400 IM in 3:58.52.
Purdue's Jin-Soo Kim was the runner-up in both breaststroke races, recording times of 57.66 and 2:03.79.
With honorable mention All-American Susan Hentschel still on the shelf for another week, Kimbre Vogel filled the void with a pair of wins in the 50 and 100 free. Vogel (23.72) and Lauren Willis (23.98) finished first and second in the 50; in the 100 free, Vogel completed the course in 52.07.
Also picking up individual victories Saturday for the Boilermakers were Joe Colley (100 back; 51.29), Shannon Grace (100 breast; 1:04.17), Blake Scholz (200 fly;1:49.99), John Schmitt (100 free; 46.31) and Romain Maire (200 Back; 1:51.13).
Purdue led right from the start, winning both the men's and women's 200 medley relays. The women's squad of Jenae Gill, Jennifer Lavers, Carlene Takaki and Willis touched first in 1:44.18, while the men's relay of Colley, Pogioli, Jon Ranochak and Andre Pereira were victorious in 1:32.06.
Purdue's men's team only trailed once during the meet, after Ted Brown won the 200 free in 1:41.05. Following that race, the Boilermakers finished first-second in the 100 back with Colley and Tim Watts, and again in the 100 breast with Pogioli and Kim leading the way.
Purdue closed the meet with another pair of relay victories. The women's 400 free relay of Willis, Vogel, Grace and Chandler beat the Notre Dame relay by almost three seconds, 3:26.59 to 3:29.44. The men's team of John Mullen, Trey Smith, Pereira and Schmitt was even more dominant, beating the second-place Purdue `B' relay by almost seven seconds, and the third-place Irish `B' relay by eight seconds. Both the Notre Dame `A' and `C' relays were disqualified.
The Boilermakers continue their homestand next Friday, Nov. 4, playing host to the Michigan State/Northwestern Triangular at 5 p.m.
