ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Boilermakers and Wolverines played to a split in Sunday's doubleheader on the diamond at Ray Fisher Stadium. Purdue took the opener with a 2-1 victory, but dropped the nightcap to Michigan 6-2.
Mitch Pruemer pitched his fifth complete game of the season in Sunday's first game, scattering eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Pruemer forced the Wolverines to strand nine runners on base, including five in scoring position. Pruemer has pitched four complete games in five starts in Big Ten play.
Tyler Heck's single in the second inning drove home Spencer Ingaldson, and Eric Osborn scored on the play when the Michigan right fielder mishandled the ball. Ingaldson and Osborn each singled to reach base before Heck's two-out base hit.
Michigan scored a single run in the home half of the second, but could not manage to push another runner across the plate against Pruemer.
In Game Two, the Wolverines jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and drove home the win with a three-run home run in the sixth by Matt Butler.
Purdue starter Brent Coudron struggled in the opening inning, allowing two runs on three hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. The southpaw settled down until yielding another run in the fourth inning. On the game, Coudron went four innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Trailing 3-2, Purdue put two runners on base with one out in the sixth, but was unable to push home the tying run. Michigan jumped at the chance to extend the lead, putting runners on first and third with two down when Butler tomahawked a Jay Buente offering over the right field wall.
Purdue scored one in the second on a groundout by Andy Dahl, then another solo run in the fourth on a Dahl double to left field.
Eric Wolfe went 4-for-7 on the afternoon for Purdue, while Mike Coles collected three hits in seven at-bats.
Purdue, currently in third place in the Big Ten, returns to Ray Fisher Stadium for the series finale against Michigan at 3:05 p.m. on Monday (2:05 in West Lafayette). The game will be broadcast in the Lafayette area on AM 1410 WLAS and via the internet at www.purduesports.com.
