ROBSTOWN, Texas - Purdue wrapped up its eight-game trip through Texas on Saturday by splitting its double header with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Fairgrounds Field. The Boilermakers fell to the Islanders 5-2 in game one before posting a 2-1 victory in the second game, which was called in the top of the sixth inning due to rain.
In the first game, Purdue faced a 1-0 deficit heading to the top of the third. Dane Wolfe connected for a single to right field, setting the stage for Andy Dahl, who put the Boilermakers on top by drilling the first pitch he saw off the scoreboard in left field for a two-run home run. The long ball was the second on the season for the senior outfielder.
Dahl's home run was the only damage Purdue could put up against TAMUCC starting pitcher Trey Hearne, who went the distance in the scheduled seven-inning game. Hearne, now 4-0 on the season, limited the Boilermakers to five hits, issued two walks, and struck out six.
TAMUCC tied the game at two in the bottom of the second and added single runs in each of the next three innings. Clint Galloway paced the Islanders at the plate with three hits, a run scored, and two RBI.
Mitch Pruemer made the start on the hill for Purdue and threw six innings, yielding 10 hits and three earned runs. He fell to 1-3 on the season.
In the second game Purdue jumped out in front in the top of the first, again via the long ball. With Spencer Ingaldson on first, Neal Gorka stepped up to the plate and blasted a home run to left, his second of the season.
This time the homer was all Boilermakers needed as Brent Coudron limited TAMUCC to one run in five innings of work. Coudron allowed four hits on the day while walking one and striking out three. He earned the win to improve his record to 1-2.
Just after the sixth inning had gotten underway, heavy rain began to fall causing the game to be cut short. After earning the double header split, Purdue now stands at 2-12 on the season while TAMUCC is 18-11-1.
The Boilermakers will return to the diamond on Friday when they open play at Lambert Field by hosting Western Michigan for a three-game series. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
