WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Katie Gearlds scored 21 points, including two free throws with 21.7 seconds left, and Purdue upset No. 23 Penn State 50-44 on Sunday.
Erin Lawless had 11 points and five rebounds, and Emily Heikes added 13 rebounds for the Boilermakers (13-9, 6-5 Big Ten), who won for just the third time in their last eight games.
Jess Strom finished with 11 points, and Big Ten leading scorer Tanisha Wright was held to six points on 2-of-15 shooting for Penn State (14-8, 9-2).
The Lady Lions, who trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, cut Purdue's lead to 46-44 with less than two minutes left.
Following a Boilermakers' miss, Penn State had a chance to tie or take the lead, but a shot clock violation turned the ball back over to Purdue with 58 seconds left.
Gearlds then missed a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down. Heikes pulled down the offensive rebound and passed it to Gearlds, who was fouled and made both free throws for a 48-44 lead.
Both teams struggled on offense and with miscues. Penn State shot 28 percent and turned the ball over 20 times, while the Boilermakers shot 31 percent and had 19 turnovers.
Purdue led 26-17 at halftime, holding the Lady Lions to a season-low 17 points.
