GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The Purdue Boilermaker wrestling headed for warmer weather and the Lone Star Duals on Saturday and came away with a 1-2 afternoon. Purdue defeated Columbia University in the day's first action, then suffered defeats to tenth-ranked Cornell University and ninth-ranked University of Oklahoma.
Purdue is now 4-5 in dual action this season. In two trips to the Lone Star Duals (2004 and 2005), the Boilermakers have a record of 5-2.
Dual One Recap -- Purdue 21, Columbia 16
The Boilermakers scored bonus-point wins at 141, 149 and 184 to secure the first dual of the day at the Lone Star Duals, defeating Columbia 21-16. Purdue trailed by five points with three weights remaining, but swept those matches for the victory.
Senior Rene Hernandez (Hammond, Ind.) and juniors Doug Withstandley (Jackson, N.J.) and Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.) each scored major decisions for the Boilermakers.
Hernandez' 8-0 win over Dean Kinports put the Boilermakers on the scoreboard after the Lions had built a 7-0 team advantage after the first two weights. Two back points awarded to the Purdue 141-pounder at time expired in the final period, accompanied by a riding time point, gave Hernandez the needed eight-point advantage.
Withstandley followed at 149 with a dominating 14-1 win over Ricky Turk. A scoreless first period possibly prevented the Boilermaker junior from scoring a technical fall. Tied 0-0 after three minutes, Withstandley scored six points in the second peiord and exploded for eight in the final stanza.
Wissel used a barage of seven takedowns to defeat Kirk Davis by a score of 18-6. Like Withstandley, Wissel seemed to get stronger as the match progressed. One takedown in the first period was followed by two in the second and four more in the final two minutes of action. Only a bee was able to slow the Purdue 184-pounder as Wissel was stung by the assailant with five seconds remaining in the match. Wissel is allergic to bee stings, so medical treatment was provided at the end of the match to prevent a reaction.
Trailing 16-15 on the team score with two matches remaining, sophomore 197-pounder Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshman heavyweight Jake O'Brien (Indianapolis, Ind.) each scored one-point wins to give the Boilermakers the dual victory.
Dual Two Recap -- #10 Cornell 29, Purdue 9
Purdue was unable to overcome some key mismatches against Cornell, falling to the Bears 29-9. Cornell used a major decision and a fall in the first two matches to build a 10-0 team lead en route to the victory.
For the Boilermakers, wins at 141, 157 and 165 scored the team's nine points.
Hernandez improved to 2-0 on the day with an 8-2 decision over Charlie Agozzino. The Purdue senior built a 4-0 advantage two periods with a takedown and a reversal, then iced the win with a pair of third-period takedowns.
Another Boilermaker to improve to 2-0 on the day was freshman Colton Salazar (Midway, Utah), who rode a first-period takedown to a 3-2 win at 157 pounds over John Cholish. At 165 pounds, sophomore John DeCeault (Tinley Park, Ill.) scored a takedown just 17 seconds into the match, posted a three-point nearfall 22 seconds later, and made that first period outburst stand in a 7-1 win over Drake Hovis.
Trailing 20-9 with three weights remaining, the Boilermakers needed three wins and some extra points to score the dual victory. However, Cornell's Tyler Baier defeated Wissel at 184 in overtime, 2-1, to secure the Bears' victory. At heavyweight, O'Brien was also defeated in overtime, losing to Matt Bogumil 3-1
Dual Three Recap -- #9 Oklahoma 30, Purdue 6
Once again, it was a story of key mismatches as the ninth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners bested the Boilermakers in the day's final action 30-6.
The dual opened with two major decisions and two one-point decisions, all in favor of the Sooners. Sophomore Sean Schmaltz (Franklin, Ind.) lost on a riding time point to Joe Comparin at 133 pounds, and Withstandley dropped a 1-0 match with fourth-ranked Matt Storniolo. Storniolo was the 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year before transferring to OU from Penn State this season.
Oklahoma won the last-second match of the day at 157 as Jerome Featherstone scored a takedown in the final second to defeat Salazar, 3-1. With approximately five seconds remaining in the match and the score tied 1-1, Salazar attempted to throw the Sooner and was unable to complete the toss, falling to the mat with Featerstone on top of him for the OU takedown and win.
DeCeault put the Boilermakers on the scoreboard at 165 pounds with a 2-1 win over Randy Sulaver. The two wrestlers traded escapes, Sulaver scoring in the second period and DeCeault in the third. However, DeCeault rode Sulaver for 1:13 in the second stanza to build enough time for the riding time point.
Controversy hit the mat at 184 when the referee, Ken Daws of Pa., awarded Wissel the winning two-point takedown with 15 seconds remaining in the sudden-victory overtime periord, but then reversed his call and gave the takedown to OU's Justin Dyer, giving the Sooner a 10-8 win. Wissel was clearly in control of Dyer's legs for the takedown and the win, but the referee took away the winning takedown in favor of a score for OU when Dyer jumped out of Wissel's hold and onto the Purdue 184-pounder.
At 197 pounds, Moore scored a takedown with 14 seconds remaining in the match for a 9-7 decision over No. 19 Joel Flaggert. Tied 3-3 after one period and 5-5 after two, Moore opened the final period with an escape to gain a one-point advantage. A Flaggert takedown and Moore escape knotted the score at 7-7, setting the stage for Moore's final offensive score.
