ASHLAND, Ohio - The Purdue wrestling team posted a 2-1 record at the 2005 Wendy's Duals in Ashland, Ohio, on Sunday afternoon. The Boilermakers put up convincing wins over Kent State and Appalachian State, but were handled easily by No. 13 Central Michigan.
The Boilermakers opened the day with a 26-6 win over the Mountaineers of Appalachian State before falling to the ranked Chippewas 36-3. In the day's finale, Purdue bested the Golden Flashes of Kent State by a score of 28-13.
With the 2-1 record at the Ashland University event, Purdue is now 29-1 in 10 trips to the Wendy's Duals over the last 11 years.
Junior 149-pounder Doug Withstandley (Jackson, N.J.) was the highlight wrestler of the day for the Boilermakers, posting a 3-0 record - the only Boilermaker to go undefeated on the afternoon.
Withstandley posted a 10-1 major decision over Appalachian State's Eric Burns and cruided to a 17-0 technical fall against Andrew Delamarte of Kent State. But the Purdue junior capped the day on the mat with a 9-7 win over CMU's Mark DiSalvo, the 10th-ranked 149-pounder in the nation. Withstandley kept the match within striking distance until a takedown just before the final whistle gave the Boilermaker the two-point victory.
Freshman 125-pounder Brandon Tucker (Broken Arrow, Okla.) also had his moment on the mat, posting a convincing 8-5 win over Kent State's Drew Opfer, ranked 19th in the country. Tucker entered the match with a 5-10 record on the year, against Opfer's 16-5 mark. Tucker scored two first-period takedowns and hit with a reversal to start the final period to post the win.
Junior Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored two major decisions for teh Boilermakers at 197 pounds. Moore bested Appalachian State's Rocky Richey 13-4 in the early dual, then capped the day with a 13-1 drubbing of Nick Hiller of Kent State.
Other key wins on the afternoon included a pin at 165 pounds by sophomore John DeCeault (Tinley Park, Ill.) over KSU's Nick Brenner and a 15-4 major decision at 141 pounds by sophomore Jason Cook (Valparaiso, Ind.) against KSU's Jason McGee.
And finally, for the second time in the last two trips to the Wendy's Duals, the Purdue bus made its voyage back to West Lafayette with a small piece of hardware. In the annual "Chow-Down" competition in which one representative from each participating team must down a Wendy's single hamburger as fast as possible, the Boilermakers ponied up the champion.
In 2003, a sports information assistant that will go unnamed walked away from the table with the title of "Chow-Down Champ." At the urging of the coaching staff and several wrestlers who were present in 2003, the same anonymous sports information assistant stepped up to the challenge and departed as the first two-time champion in the event's history.
The winner of the "Chow-Down" receives a small trophy bearing the likeness of a small swine atop a wooden block. The 2003 and 2005 trophies are now displayed with honor in said sports information assistant's office.
