ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The 2004-05 wrestling season did not start as hoped for the Purdue Boilermakers, falling to the Missouri Tigers on Friday evening 25-10. Purdue entered the dual ranked No. 19 in the nation while Missouri is ranked 10th nationally.
Purdue got wins from juniors Chris Fleeger and Doug Withstandley as well as freshman Jake O'Brien, a win in his first collegiate match. However, the Boilermakers could not overcome the flourish of ranked wrestlers sent to the mat in the middle and upper weight classes by the Tigers.
The dual opened in favor of Missouri with an 8-2 win by Austin DeVoe over freshman Brandon Tucker (Broken Arrow, Okla.). The Boilermakers bounced back at 133 pounds with a major decision by Fleeger (Trout Run, Pa.).
Fleeger, ranked No. 2 in the nation, dominated the action in his first match on the collegiate scene since the 2003 NCAA championship match. Two first period takedowns and two back points built a 6-1 lead for the Purdue grappler. In the final period, Fleeger added another takedown and three more back points to gain the major decision.
Missouri regained the lead with a decision by Chris McCormick over Ben Sprunger (Bluffton, Ind.), but Purdue quickly responded with a win at 149 pounds by Withstandley (Jackson, N.J.). After a scoreless first period, Missouri's Justin Cole took a 3-1 lead in the second on the match's only takedown to that point. Withstandley, No. 15 in the nation, rebounded in the final stanza with a takedown of his own and added a point for riding time to claim a 5-3 lead.
The Tigers grabbed the momentum again at 157 pounds and did not let go until the final match of the evening.
MU's Brad Cieliski, ranked 14th, scored a reversal in the first sudden victory to defeat freshman Dan Bedoy (Hammond, Ind.) in the Boilermaker's first varsity match. At 165 pounds, John DeCeault (Tinley Park, Ill.) dropped a tough 4-0 decision to sixth-ranked Tyron Woodley, and No. 2 Ben Askren pinned junior Barry Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind.) with 32 seconds remaining in the first period.
The spotlight match of the night was at 184 pounds, a match that saw Missouri's Matt Pell score a last-second takedown to post a major decision over junior Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.). With both wrestlers ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation, Pell gained the early advantage with a takedown 19 seconds into the match and never trailed after that point.
Missouri capped the dual victory at 197 with a fifth consecutve win as No. 12 Jeff Foust topped sophomore Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.), ranked 19th, by a 7-2 decision.
At heavyweight, O'Brien (Indianapolis, Ind.) used superior quickness to record three takedowns and a reversal against Chase Wetenkamp to post an 8-4 win.
Purdue (0-1) travels to the home of the Missouri Tigers for the Missouri Open on Sunday, Nov. 21. The tournament features nationally-ranked teams such as Missouri, Oklahoma (No. 6) and Illinois (No. 3).
