WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's swimming and diving team began its season with the annual intrasquad meet tonight, a meet that was dominated by the Gold squad. The Goldies outscored their opponents 126-98, the largest margin of victory in the last five years.

The Gold opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay and never looked back. The winning team of Luke Dickson, Giordan Pogioli, Blake Scholz, and Trey Smith finished with a time of 3:26.27, nearly six seconds better than the second place black team.

Several members of the relay team also had outstanding individual performances. Pogioli accompanied his realy win with two individual titles, winning the 200 breast and 200 IM. Scholz claimed the top spot in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.26.

After swimming the final 100 yards in the opening relay, Smith swam the anchor leg on the Gold's 400 free relay that claimed the top spot.

Steuart Martens was the only swimmer to claim two races without being a member of a winning relay team. Martens was the victor in both the 500 and 1000 meter freestyles, giving two more races to the Gold.

Louis Paul captured an individual victory for the Gold as well as swimming a leg on the winning 400 free relay team. Paul, who recently placed second at the ConocoPhillips National Championships, won the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 1:41.37.

For the Black squad, Ignatius Goh posted the team's first win with a victory in the 50 free, the fourth race of the evening. Eric Prugh followed with a win in the 100 free and Romain Maire took home the top spot in the 200 breast.

The men's swimming and diving teams open their competitive season on Friday, October 29, 2004 when they host Arizona State. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
