WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Northwestern on Saturday. The 75th-ranked Boilermakers are now 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten, while the 36th-ranked Wildcats are 12-4 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Purdue just missed on its first-strike opportunity, losing the doubles point in a tiebreaker at No. 3. After juniors Sounak Chatterjee and Filip Koziell provided a win at No. 2, sophomore Paul Rose and freshman Scott Warner came up just short with a 9-8 loss to Matt Christian and Adam Schaechterle at the 3 spot. The Wildcat pair won the tiebreaker by an 8-6 count.

Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, the Boilermakers needed to win four of six matches. After bad weather forced the action indoors, Purdue managed to win only two contests. Senior Troy Havens held on to beat Christian Tempke 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2, and junior David Robinson defeated Willy Lock 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden said the Boilermakers missed some chances to break the Wildcats.

"We competed very well, but we did not capitalize on some opportunities," Madden said.

Madden singled out Havens and Robinson for their efforts.

"Troy and David played very confidently and they played within themselves," Madden said. "They showed great leadership in those regards."

Purdue will take on Wisconsin on Sunday in Madison, beginning at noon.
