WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team lost 5-2 at Ohio State on Saturday. The defeat, the third in a row for the 55th-ranked Boilermakers, brought Purdue's record to 7-10 (2-4 Big Ten). The 65th-ranked Buckeyes, meanwhile, improved to 8-9 (3-2 Big Ten) with the victory.
Ohio State got on the scoreboard first by winning two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. After the point had already been decided, junior Lara Burgarello and freshman Alyssa Rodriguez came through with an 8-7 win over Lindsey Adams and Emily DeCamilla at No. 3.
The Boilermakers needed four singles wins to take the team victory, but managed just two. The Buckeyes won the first three matches that came off the court, at Nos. 2, 4 and 1, deciding the outcome before Purdue could muster a point.
Senior Melissa Woods and junior Shawna Zuccarini were the only Purdue players to light up the scoreboard for the Boilermakers. Woods came back to defeat Kristen Messmer 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6, and Zuccarini hung on to defeat Adams 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 5.
Purdue will look to get back in the win column Sunday, when it plays at Penn State. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
