WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team won its second straight match with a 4-3 victory at No. 61 San Diego State on Wednesday. The 53rd-ranked Boilermakers, who have won two consecutive 4-3 decisions, are now 5-6 (1-0 Big Ten), while the Aztecs drop to 4-7.
Purdue won the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Junior Shawna Zuccarini and Hala Sufi picked up an 8-5 win at No. 2, while junior Lara Burgarello and freshman Alyssa Rodriguez teamed for an 8-4 victory at No. 3.
The Boilermakers needed three singles wins to take the match, and that is exactly what it got. Delivering the victories were Sufi at No. 3, Rodriguez at No. 4, and senior Melissa Woods at No. 6.
For Purdue, which had not played since upsetting No. 17 Illinois 4-3 on March 7, this was its first taste of outdoor tennis since a Feb. 1 match at LSU.
"We did very well considering we were playing in conditions we haven't experienced in awhile," assistant coach Chris Karges-Iandolo said. "We competed at every spot."
The Boilermakers will compete at UC Irvine on Friday, March 19, in their final non-conference tilt of the season. The match with the Anteaters is slated to start at 1:30 p.m. PST.
