WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 42 Purdue women's tennis team posted a convincing 6-1 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos at the Lafayette Sports Center on Wednesday.
Purdue started things off by sweeping the doubles point with identical 8-6 scores across the board. The duo of seniors Gretchen Haynor and Melissa Woods defeated Frederika Girsang and Valeria Stoilova at the No. 1 position, while junior Shawna Zuccarini and freshman Hala Sufi topped Malena Remynse and Laelynn Bernosky at the No. 2 spot. Junior Lara Burgarello and freshman Alyssa Rodriguez combined to take down Reedhina Parekh and Carrie Jeanmaire to finish the sweep.
"Western Michigan came in here as the underdog and we didn't want to give them a chance to breathe," head coach Mat Iandolo said. "We wanted to get on them early. Because we were able to win the doubles point, it allowed us to carry the momentum over into the singles and really make a relatively easy match of it. I felt like we had a solid performance today."
The Boilermakers turned in singles win at the No. 2 through six positions, all in straight sets. Junior Amy Walgenbach defeated Parekh, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot, while Rodriguez posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Stoilova at the No. 3 position. Zuccarini topped Remynse 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5, while Burgarello posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bernosky at the No. 6. Sufi sealed the match for Purdue with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 3, boosting her season record to 5-0.
With the win, the Boilermakers snap a two-match losing streak, improve their series lead to 13-10 over Western Michigan and move to 3-2 on the year. Purdue's next match will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 15 against #39 Missouri.
"It feels good just to have everybody healthy at this stage," Iandolo said. "Having a player the caliber of Shawna Zuccarini out of the singles lineup hurt us against LSU. To have her back in there is a good sign. Now we have a week and a half to get ready for a very good Missouri team to come here."
