WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision at No. 8 Vanderbilt on Saturday. The 55th-ranked Boilermakers are now 3-2, while the Commodores, last year's NCAA runners-up, are 6-4.
Vanderbilt got off to a good start by winning all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the day. The Commodores kept things rolling in singles despite a challenge issued by the Boilermakers. Five of the six first sets in singles were decided by one or two points; Vanderbilt won all six first sets, but three came by way of a tiebreaker.
Purdue managed to win three singles sets on the day, with sophomore Paul Rose fighting back to take his second set against 46th-ranked Scott Brown at No. 1. Fellow sophomore Colin Foster won his second match against 45th-ranked Zach Dailey at No. 4, as did junior Sounak Chatterjee against Nathan Sachs at No. 6.
Purdue head coach Tim Madden was pleased with how the Boilermakers competed.
"I am very proud of how well we fought in this match," Madden said. "Vanderbilt is a very good team, and we came up just a bit short. Despite the loss, we can find a lot of positives from this match and hopefully can become better from the experience."
Purdue will travel from Nashville to Murfreesboro, for a Sunday match at Middle Tennessee State. The match against the 63rd-ranked Blue Raiders at noon.
