WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision at LSU on Sunday. The 42nd-ranked Boilermakers fall to 2-2 with the loss, while the 49th-ranked Lady Tigers improve to 4-0.
LSU got on the scoreboard first by sweeping all three doubles matches for the first point of the day. Purdue freshman Alyssa Rodriguez was the first Boilermaker to respond in singles, as she downed Marina Chiarelli 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 to even the score at 1-all.
The Lady Tigers took the next two points, with Lauren Seaman and Jessica Ferguson beating Boilermaker seniors Melissa Woods and Gretchen Haynor at Nos. 6 and 1, respectively.
Purdue, needing to win the last three matches to take the team victory, stayed alive with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph by freshman Hala Sufi over Rocio Fantili at No. 3. Unfortunately, LSU answered with a win at No. 5, as Camila Caliari beat junior Lara Burgarello 6-3, 7-6.
Junior Amy Walgenbach won the last match of the day at No. 2 singles.
Purdue, which defeated LSU 5-2 in Lafayette last April, will return to its home court Feb. 4, when it plays host to Western Michigan at 1 p.m.
