WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team wrapped up its trip to the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Sunday. The conclusion of the three-day tournament also signaled the end of the Boilermakers' fall season.
On the final day of competition, Purdue collected two doubles wins. Sophomore Brittany Reitz and freshman Hala Sufi beat UNLV's Anne Claire Ortiz Luis and Claire Smith 8-2 in a consolation semifinal. In the other consolation semifinal, junior Lara Burgarello and freshman Alyssa Rodriguez beat Arizona State's Vana Tomas and Rebecca Rankin 8-3. The two Boilermaker pairs elected not to challenge one another for the consolation title.
Both Sufi and Rodriguez suffered losses in singles, with Sufi dropping a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision to Duke's Kristin Cargill, and Rodriguez falling 6-2, 6-4 to Arizona State's Lauren Colallilo.
The Boilermakers will return to action in the spring semester, when they open Jan. 24 with a home doubleheader against DePaul and Miami (Ohio).
