Oct. 3, 2003

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's tennis sophomore Paul Rose won two matches in the prequalifying round of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Friday.

Rose beat Mark Gellard of East Carolina 6-0, 6-4 in the first round, then beat Nick Brotman of UC Santa Barbara 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-5 in the second. He will face Catalin Bradu of UCF on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden believes Rose can keep advancing, with the hopes of making the qualifying round and then the main draw of the national championship event.

"Paul has the ability to overpower people," Madden said. "If he continues to play to his strengths, he could go deep into this tournament."

Senior Troy Havens, who traveled with Rose to Tennessee, lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round of prequalifying to Tomas Bohunicky of Oklahoma State.
