WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue freshman women's tennis player Alyssa Rodriguez advanced to the semifinals of the Kentucky Fall Classic's White flight by posting two wins in Lexington, Friday.
Rodriguez beat Wildcat Joelle Schwenk 6-1, 6-3 in the first round, then defeated William & Mary's Lingda Yang 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Other Boilermakers who advanced to the quarterfinals with first-round wins were: freshman Hala Sufi, freshman Emily Bomersback and sophomore Brittany Reitz. Sufi rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over William & Mary's Kate Boomershine in the Blue flight; Bomersback beat William & Mary's Holly Lindloff 6-2, 6-3 in the Green flight; and Reitz beat Ohio State's Meredith Vincent 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 in the White flight.
Sufi, Bomersback and Reitz all fell in their quarterfinal matches.
Junior Shawna Zuccarini lost her first-round match in the Blue flight, but rebounded to defeat Abilene Christian's Rachel Taylor 7-5, 6-1.
Junior Catie McLevish competed in the Green flight, but lost her first-round and consolation matches. Paula Schmidt lost her first-round match in the Red flight.
In doubles, Rodriguez teamed with junior Lara Burgarello to defeat Taylor and Colleen Reynolds 9-7 in the White flight. Zuccarini and McLevish paired for a 9-8 (3) victory over Krista Dunbar and Alex DeGuzman of William & Mary.
Reitz and Sufi lost in the first round of the Blue flight, as did Bomersback and Schmidt in the Red flight.
