WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Colin Foster and Eric Hodgman collected two singles wins to go along with doubles victories in the Notre Dame Tom Fallon Invitational on Friday, in South Bend.
Foster, a sophomore, beat Maryland's Scott Peters 7-5, 6-3 to start the day, then defeated Michigan State's Michael Flowers 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8). He teamed with junior Filip Koziell to defeat Troy Demers and David Reichsfeld 8-4 in doubles.
Hodgman, in just the second tournament of his collegiate tennis career, blanked the Terrapins' Pierre Rudder 6-0, 6-0, then beat the Spartans' Steve Srivastava 6-4, 7-5. He and fellow freshman Scott Warner combined to defeat John O'Rourke and Rory Theis of Maryland 8-4 in doubles.
Other Purdue winners in a hidden dual with Michigan State were: junior David Robinson, who beat Eric Simonton 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6); Koziell, who beat Mike Brown 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5); and freshman Jarred Leibner, who defeated Anthony Stefani 6-2, 6-0.
Foster and Hodgman were the lone Purdue singles winners against Maryland. The Boilermakers did, however, win all three doubles contests against the Terrapins. In addition to those registered by Foster and Koziell, and Hodgman and Warner, juniors Sounak Chatterjee and Jamie Kish paired up to defeat Chase Dawson and Peters 8-3.
Madden said the Boilermakers made a laudable recovery after a somewhat shaky start in South Bend.
"Play started off fairly sloppy against Maryland, but we did compete harder and showed improvement against a tough Michigan State team," Madden said. "Colin and Eric stood out, and their success was very encouraging. Colin is playing with a lot more confidence than he did a year ago, and Eric is one of our freshmen who is getting a lot of great experience and improving each time out on the court."
Play at the Tom Fallon Invitational will continue Saturday, with Purdue taking on the host Fighting Irish in a hidden dual beginning at 10 a.m. The Boilermakers will face Michigan in doubles at 2 p.m.
