WEST LAFYETTE, Ind. - Senior Troy Havens and sophomore Paul Rose advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Championships with a Sunday win in East Lansing, Mich.
Havens and Rose teamed up for an 8-3 victory against Indiana's Dmytro Ishtuganov and Neil Kenner in the round of 16. The Boilermaker pair, seeded seventh, will take on third-seeded Michael Calkins and Chris Martin of Illinois on Monday. Both the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Monday, with the championship being decided Tuesday.
Purdue head coach Tim Madden said Havens and Rose have overpowered their opponents thus far in the tournament.
"Troy and Paul are hitting big serves and big returns, and they've made it look easy so far," Madden said. "Now their focus is to play smart. To win this tournament you can't do it with serves alone."
In singles, Rose pulled out a 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 marathon victory over Northwestern's Christian Tempke in the round of 32, before losing 6-4, 6-1 to Illinois' Ryler DeHeart, seeded eighth and ranked 44th, in the round of 16.
Winners from all nine ITA regional tournaments will earn berths to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be played in Ann Arbor, Mich., from Nov. 6 to 8.
