Rose Advances At ITA Midwest Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's tennis player Paul Rose enjoyed a successful opening day at the ITA Midwest Championships in East Lansing, Mich. Rose won his first-round singles match and paired with senior Troy Havens to win two doubles contests in the regional tournament Saturday.

Rose beat Wisconsin's Alex Kasarov 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 in the singles main draw. He will face Northwestern's Christian Tempke in the round of 32 Sunday.

Rose and Havens beat Ball State's Matt Laramore and Brad Rhodes 9-7 in the first round. In the second, they beat Jhonny Berrido and Damar Johnson of Louisville by an 8-5 count. They will play Indiana's Dmytro Ishtuganov and Neil Kenner in the round of 16.

In other singles action, Havens lost 6-2, 6-3 to Ohio State's Brenton Contini, while junior Filip Koziell fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to Notre Dame's Barry King.

Winners from all nine ITA regional tournaments across the country will gain berths to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be held in Ann Arbor, Mich., from Nov. 6 to 8.
