WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team shined on Sunday, the second and final day of the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette.
Head coach Tim Madden, who had been displeased with his team's effort on Saturday, felt much better when play concluded Sunday.
"I was very pleased today with how well we competed at every position," Madden said. "In singles, we played with a lot more confidence, and I am certain that we ended this tournament as much stronger competitors than we were coming in."
Madden thought the day's format lent itself to a better team performance, as the Boilermakers played two doubles matches in a hidden dual.
"It felt good for our guys to have the feeling that they were out there competing as a team," Madden said. "In the fall we're used to playing every man for himself, but this gave us a great chance to build some team chemistry."
Purdue began the day with singles, however. Junior Jamie Kish was the first Boilermaker to post a victory, as he defeated Northwestern's Justin Hoeveler 6-2, 6-3. Also collecting wins against the Wildcats were senior Troy Havens and sophomore Paul Rose. Havens beat Adam Schaecterle 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, while Rose downed Christian Tempke 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.
Madden singled out both Havens and Rose for their resolve to pull out three-set victories.
"Paul is such a good mental competitor. He took the match away from his opponent in the third set," Madden said. "Troy bounced back from a tough day by digging down and showing great senior leadership. He played with power, but he also played very smart tennis. They both found ways to get it done."
Getting it done in doubles against Northwestern were sophomore Colin Foster and junior Filip Koziell, who beat Hoeveler and Tempke 9-7. Juniors Seth McKinley and Sounak Chatterjee teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Schaecterle and Willy Lock.
Purdue put an exclamation point on its day by sweeping Toledo in doubles. Foster and Koziell beat Khalid Al Nabhani and Tony Tran 9-7; Chatterjee and freshman Eric Hodgman defeated Freddy Gomez and Cristobal Toral 8-2; and juniors David Robinson and Jamie Kish beat Brian Rager and Travis Curran 8-0.
A select group of Boilermakers will return to action next weekend at the ITA Midwest Regionals, which will be held in East Lansing, Mich.
