WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's tennis sophomore Paul Rose and junior Sounak Chatterjee both won three matches in the first day of the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 18. Two others, junior David Robinson and sophomore Colin Foster, won two matches.

Rose began the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Western Michigan's Ravi Pathanjali. He then teamed with senior Troy Havens for an 8-5 win against Butler's brother tandem of Brandon and Kevin Gill. He finished the afternoon by beating Indiana's Tom Bagnato 7-5, 6-2.

Chatterjee beat Western Michigan's Dan Grupp 6-3, 6-0, then paired with junior Seth McKinley for a 9-7 win against Butler's Andy Bartish and James Low. Chatterjee concluded the day with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory against Indiana's David Bubenicek.

Robinson beat Western Michigan's Justin Kates 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and Indiana's Dmytro Ishtuganov 6-2, 6-4.

Foster defeated Bronco Erik Lindroos 6-4, 6-3, and Hoosier Ryan McCarthy 7-6, 6-2.

Junior Jamie Kish collected a 6-1, 6-1 win against Brian Rager of Toledo. Freshman Scott Warner downed Rager 6-1, 6-2.

Purdue's other singles winners on the day were junior Filip Koziell, who beat Butler's Chris Peric 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, and freshman Eric Hodgman, who beat Lindroos 6-4, 6-1.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden singled out Rose and Foster for their play.

"Paul and Colin are two guys who are consistently competing and finding ways to get it done," Madden said. "Both played with so much confidence. If something goes wrong, they're able to shake it off and compete for the next point."

Madden also considered the Havens-Rose doubles win against the 46th-ranked Gills a highlight.

"The Gills are one of the best teams in the country," Madden said. "Paul and Troy overpowered them. They never let them in the match."

Purdue will begin Sunday with a doubles and singles match against Northwestern, then will conclude the tournament with a doubles match against Toledo. All three matches will be played at the Varsity Tennis Courts on the Purdue campus.
