WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team is still alive at the end of day two of the Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, as five Boilermakers advanced into the final matches of the consolation round on Saturday.
In singles, senior Troy Havens, junior David Robinson, and freshman Eric Hodgman advanced, as did the doubles team of junior Seth McKinley and junior Filip Koziell.
Havens defeated Murray from North Carolina State 6-3, 7-5 to continue on into the semifinals of the Flight A double consolation.
In the singles Flight B consolation matches, Robinson handled Virginia's Walker 6-2, 6-3. Hodgman also won in straight sets, with a win of 6-2, 6-3. With wins in their next match they would meet up in the final.
McKinley and Koziell obtained two victories on Saturday to advance into the final of the doubles Flight A consolation bracket. They took out Milos and Oskarsson of Old Dominion 8-3, and the team of Ross and Spice from Wake Forest 8-2.
Going into Saturday Purdue's hopes were on Filip Koziel, sophomore Colin Foster and freshman Jarred Leibner. Though all three received losses at the hands of their opponents in the main draw of competition on Saturday Purdue head coach Tim Madden was pleased with their play against such a high level of competition.
"This tournament has provided the chance to play some of the nations tops teams," Madden said. "This fact has allowed me to see signs of improvement already in the season."
Play at the Virginia Invitational will conclude on Sunday. Complete results can be found at www.virginiasports.com.
