WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team finished its second day of competition at the St. Mary's Women's Fall Tennis Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday.
The day's winners included 75th-ranked junior Amy Walgenbach, who defeated Ohio State's Jackie Lescovar 6-3, 6-1 in Flight One. Senior co-captain Gretchen Haynor beat Furman's Lauren Welch 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in Flight Three. In Flight Eight, freshman Emily Bomersback recorded the first win of her collegiate career with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Texas A&M's Danielle Lee.
Walgenbach, Haynor and Bomersback all will play in matches to decide fifth and sixth place on Sunday.
The three Boilermakers who advanced to the semifinals of their respective eight-player draws dropped their second-round decisions, and will play for third place on Sunday. Freshman Hala Sufi lost 6-2, 7-5 to Lee Bairos of North Carolina in Flight Four; freshman Alyssa Rodriguez lost 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 to the Aggies' Nicki Mechem in Flight Five; and sophomore Brittany Reitz lost 6-3, 6-4 to Aggie Anna Lubinsky in Flight Six.
Junior Shawna Zuccarini dropped her second-round match by a 6-1, 6-1 score to N.C. State's Kristin Lam in Flight Two. Because only seven players were slotted in the eight-player bracket, Zuccarini will receive a third-round bye and automatically claims seventh place.
Junior Catie McLevish fell 6-4, 6-3 to Seva Iwinski of Texas A&M in Flight Seven, and will play for seventh place on Sunday.
In doubles, Zuccarini and Haynor teamed for a third-place finish by virtue of an 8-4 victory over Orlay and Jassawalla of N.C. State in Flight One. Sufi and Rodriguez placed sixth following an 8-4 loss to Tennessee's Kray and Robards in Flight Two. McLevish and Bomersback finished eighth in Flight Three after an 8-2 loss to Ohio State's Adams and Vincent.
The final round of singles at the St. Mary's Women's Fall Tennis Classic will be played Sunday, with action beginning at 9 a.m.
