Women's Tennis Finishes Day One At Tennessee Tournament

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Three Purdue women's tennis players advanced to semifinal singles matches after winning on the first day of the St. Mary's Women's Fall Tennis Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., on Friday. Sophomore Brittany Reitz, and freshmen Alyssa Rodriguez and Hala Sufi all are two wins away from claiming flight titles.

Sufi beat Emily DeCamilla of Ohio State 6-2, 6-2 in Flight Four, while classmate Rodriguez dispatched the Buckeyes' Anna Volberg by the same score in Flight Five.

Reitz downed N.C. State's Danielle Stadelmann 6-2, 6-0 in Flight Six.

Also competing in the three-day tournament for Purdue were senior Gretchen Haynor; juniors Amy Walgenbach, Shawna Zuccarini and Catie McLevish; and freshman Emily Bomersback.

Walgenbach, ranked 75th in the nation, dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to 27th-ranked Tammy Encina of the Lady Vols in Flight One. Zuccarini lost 6-1, 6-3 to 81st-ranked Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest in Flight Two. In Flight Three, Haynor fell 6-2, 6-2 to Texas A&M's Roberta Spencer. McLevish lost 6-4, 6-1 to Tennessee's Erin Cohn in Flight Seven, while Bomersback lost 6-4, 6-1 to the Lady Vols' Claudia Farace in Flight Eight.

Three doubles teams competed for the Boilermakers on Day One. Haynor and Zuccarini split, with an 8-5 win over Coetzee and Smith of Wake Forest, and an 8-4 loss to Encina and Jones of Tennessee in Flight One. Sufi and Rodriguez lost 9-8 (7) in the first round of Flight Two to N.C. State's Chandrasekar and Arechevaleta, but rebounded to beat Furman's Morris and Bornt-Davis 8-5. Bomersback and McLevish fell 8-3 to Furman's Welch and Eckert in round one, and 8-0 to N.C. State's Romero and Stadelmann in the back draw of Flight Three.

Play continues on Saturday, with one round of doubles and one round of singles. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
