WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team upset No. 47 Ohio State with a final score of 4-3, today.
The Boilermakers improved their overall record to 7-9 and 2-3 in the Big Ten. Purdue handed the Buckeyes their first conference loss this season. Ohio State will drop to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the league.
Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased that the team accomplished their goal of defeating Ohio State.
"This was a pivotal match for the Big Ten race," Iandolo said. "We just need to take care of business against Penn State tomorrow to put us back in the running for the Big Ten tournament."
The afternoon began by Ohio State winning the doubles point.
At the No. 3 spot, junior Gretchen Haynor and senior Melissa Iqbal defeated the pair of Meaghan Colville and Lindsey Adams 8-0.
Junior Melissa Woods and sophomore Shawna Zuccarini were down 6-3 before coming back to tie with the tandem of Erica Fisk and Jackie Leskovar. They were unable to hold off the Buckeyes as they won the match with a 9-7 final score at the No. 2 spot. The Buckeyes defeated Purdue at the No. 1 spot for the point.
In the singles competition, the sophomores scored three of the four points to pull out an upset.
In fifth position, Zuccarini saw a familiar face on the other side of the court. Zuccarini upended Lindsay Williams 6-3, 6-0, which was exciting considering she lost 6-2, 6-0 to Williams in 2002.
"I lost to her last year and this was revenge," Zuccarini said. "It was fate that I was able to play her because she had been playing at the No. 3 position this season."
Sophomore Lara Burgarello defeated Lindsay Bryan 6-1, 6-2 in sixth position, while senior Missy Wright served Emily DeCamilla a 6-3, 6-1 loss at the No. 5 spot.
In second position, sophomore Amy Walgenbach upended Erica Fisk 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the match.
"It was a really nice feeling to contribute to the team and help win the match," Walgenbach said. "The fans really encouraged me to fight hard and win."
On Sunday, April 6, Purdue will host Penn State at 10:30 a.m. The match will be held at the Lafayette Sports Club.
