WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team could not push a runner across the plate in two games against Ohio State on Saturday at Lambert Field, falling by shutout in both games of a doubleheader. The Boilermakers lost the opener 6-0 before falling to the Buckeyes in the nightcap 4-0.

With the pair of losses, Purdue drops to 23-17 overall and 8-9 in the Big Ten while Ohio State improves to 25-12 and 12-6 in the conference.

The Boilermakers ran into two strong pitching efforts by the Buckeyes, the first from Scott Lewis (7-0), the Big Ten's ERA and strikeout leader. Purdue was able to scratch out just two hits against the sophomore, a third inning single by Tyler Johnstone and a fifth inning double off the bat of Brad Kriner. Lweis recorded 10 strikeouts in the seven inning affair.

Ohio State scored single runs in the second and fifth innings against Purdue starter Mitch Pruemer (4-3) before erupting for four runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Pruemer recorded 6.0 innings pitched and yielded six runs on 10 hits while walking three. Trae Dauby relieved the Boilermaker starter after four batters in the seventh and allowed one hit and two walks. The Purdue pitching staff did not record a strikeout in the game.

Game Two was a pitching duel between Purdue's Chris Toneguzzi (4-2) and Ohio State's Josh Newman (4-3), with Newman getting the win after the Buckeyes put up four runs on two hits in the sixth, the big blow coming on a three-run homer to left by Derek Kinnear. Toneguzzi pitched 5.2 innings, allowed four runs on four hits and two bases on balls while striking out four. Jason Driscoll hurled the final 1.1 innings without allowing a baserunner.

The second game was scoreless until the sixth inning, and Toneguzzi had a no-hitter intact until the fifth when Terry Pettorini doubled to left-center with two outs.

On the afternoon, the Boilermakers managed just eight hits against the two Buckeyes, with Brad Kriner and Daniel Underwood picking up two hits each.

The Boilermakers and Buckeyes return to Lambert Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader.
