WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team upended Michigan State 6-1, today.
The Boilermakers improved their overall record to 10-9 and 4-3 in the Big Ten. The Spartans will drop to 8-11 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo felt like everyone contributed to today's victory.
"We took care of business at every spot," Iandolo said. "The team made a great adjustment to playing indoor on a fast track. Now we're just trying to get ready for tomorrow against Michigan."
In doubles, the Purdue pair of junior Melissa Woods and sophomore Shawna Zuccarini defeated Michigan State's tandem of Karen Gustafson and Kate Thomas 8-1 at the No. 2 spot. Junior Gretchen Haynor and senior Melissa Iqbal handed the Spartan's combo of Josie Schmude and Marta Walasek an 8-4 loss at the No. 3 spot for the doubles point.
In singles, Haynor defeated Keri Thompson 6-7, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot, while senior Missy Wright defeated Schmude 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot. Sophomore Lara Burgarello clinched the match at the No. 6 spot after serving Walasek a 6-2, 6-2 loss.
The Purdue women's tennis team will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Sunday, April 13 to face No. 48 Michigan.
