West Lafayette, Ind. - After coming off a 5-2 loss at No. 25 Ohio State last weekend, the Purdue men's tennis team rebounded with a 5-2 victory over Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday. The win moves the 50th-ranked Boilermakers to 11-6 overall and improves their conference record to 5-2.

Purdue took care of things early on by taking the doubles point. Senior Scott Mayer and junior Troy Havens partnered up and defeated Michigan's Anthony Jackson and Josef Fischer 8-5 at No. 1. At No. 2, senior Andrew Wakefield and freshman Paul Rose combined for an 8-3 win over Chris Shaya and Chris Rolf, while junior Seth McKinley and freshman Sounak Chatterjee defeated the Wolverines' Carey Rubin and Vinny Gossain 8-6 at No. 3.

Purdue coach Tim Madden applauded his team for its dominating doubles play to start the match.

"Our guys are taking care of business early," Madden said. "Andrew Wakefield and Paul Rose are prime examples of two guys who not only got themselves ready to play, but they took their opponents out of the game in doubles."

With a 1-0 lead in the match, the Boilermakers had all the confidence they needed to dominate singles play. Purdue did dominate, winning four of the six matches.

At No. 2 singles, Wakefield recorded Purdue's first singles victory with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Anthony Jackson. Rose was the second Boilermaker singles winner, with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against David Anving at No. 4.

Leading 3-0, the Boilermakers needed just one more win to guarantee the teamvictory. Havens delivered the clincher, defeating Chris Shaya 6-2, 6-0.

Following losses to No. 5 David Robinson and No. 6 Colin Foster, Mayer came through to close out the affair with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback victory over Michael Rubin.

Mayer was thankful for the victory.

"I played a brutal first set," Mayer said. "But the reason I won was because I was staying focused and staying tough. It wasn't pretty, but I'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day."

Purdue continues its weekend hosting duties when it welcomes Michigan State on Sunday, April 12, at the Varsity Tennis Courts. Doubles play will begin at noon.
