WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team defeated DePaul today in Lafayette.
Purdue began the match by winning the doubles points.
At the No. 2 doubles spot, junior Melissa Woods and sophomore Shawna Zuccarini upended DePaul's tandem of Natalie Matko and Karen Falduto 8-0. In third position sophomore Lara Burgarello and freshman Brittany Reitz defeated Rachel Dybas and Megan Stewart 8-2.
"It was great to have Brittany back in the doubles competition," Iandolo said. "She is recovering well and we hope to have her in full swing to finish out the conference season."
In singles, sophomore Amy Walgenbach continued to improve upon her singles record by defeating Brenda Leung 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. Walgenbach owns an 8-2 singles record.
"Amy has the best record on the team this year," Iandolo said. "She is playing with a lot of confidence and it shows on the court."
Burgarello impressed Purdue's coaching staff after defeating Matko 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.
"Lara made a difficult match easy," Iandolo said. "She played very well today, and really gave it to her opponent."
The Boilermakers went on to win at the No. 1, 5, and 6 spots to end the match with six points.
"This was a good win," Iandolo said. "DePaul has competed against some Big Ten schools and did very well. We took control of the match early and kept the momentum throughout the singles competition."
The Purdue women's tennis team ended the weekend with a 5-5 overall record, 0-2 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers will have a week off from competition before heading to California to face No. 29 San Diego State on March 19 and No. 4 California on March 22.
