LEXINGTON, Ky. - One day after exploding for 16 runs and 21 hits, the Purdue baseball team was unable to muster up an offensive attack against Kentucky, falling to the Wildcats 2-1 at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Ky.
With the loss, Purdue's record dips to 4-2 while Kentucky evens its mark at 6-6.
The Boilermakers scored first in the contest on an RBI single by Daniel Underwood that scored Tyler Johnstone in the top of the third inning. It would be the only time a member of the Purdue nine would cross the plate.
Kentucky answered the lone Purdue run with a two-spot in the fifth inning off Boilermaker starter Scott Byrnes (0-1). A two-run single off the bat of Jeff Kungl plated Russ Rutherford and Caleb Brook for the winning runs.
Nick McIntyre collected two hits for the Boilermakers, his second multiple-hit game in as many days. In the game, Purdue out-hit the Wildcats, 7-6, but stranded ten runners on base to Kentucky's six.
Byrnes received the loss after pitching 6.2 innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out five.
Purdue and Kentucky complete the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
