WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team upended Wisconsin 4-3, today, for its first conference win this season.
"This was a big win," Iandolo said. "The team did a great job of playing big on big points."
In doubles, junior Melissa Woods and sophomore Shawna Zuccarini defeated Katie McGaffigan and Shana McElroy 9-7 at the No. 2 spot. Wisconsin went on to win at the No. 1 and 3 spots for the point.
Heading into the singles competition, the Boilermakers had to turn the match around in order to come away with a team victory.
"We felt like we needed to fight hard and play with enthusiasm," Iandolo said.
Sophomore Amy Walgenbach highlighted the singles competition by upsetting 89th-ranked McElroy 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Walgenbach owns a 10-3 record for the spring season.
"Amy is playing at the top of her game," Iandolo said. "This was a big win for her individually."
At the No. 4 spot, Zuccarini defeated Lindsay Martin 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, while senior Missy Wright upended Teresa Gonzaga 6-1, 6-2 in sixth position.
Junior Gretchen Haynor clinched the match at the No. 1 spot. Haynor defeated Linde Mues 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4 for the final team point.
"Gretchen stay focused mentally and was able to finish out her match on top," Iandolo said. "She has become more confident in playing at the top of the lineup and it shows in her play."
The Purdue women's tennis team will travel to Evanston, Ill. to face Northwestern on Sunday, March 30.
