Women's Tennis Falls At No. 3 California

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 3 California on Saturday. The 54th-ranked Boilermakers are now 5-7, while California is 12-2.

Purdue had a chance to win the doubles point, but the Golden Bears swept all three matches. Sophomores Lara Burgarello and Shawna Zuccarini fell by a slight three-game margin at No. 3 against Christina Fusano and Jessica Shu. At No. 1, senior Missy Wright and junior Gretchen Haynor lost in a tiebreak to Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt.

Sophomore Amy Walgenbach pulled out Purdue's lone win at No. 2 singles. The Carmel, Calif., native beat Catherine Lynch 6-4, 6-3 (10-8).

California won the remaining five singles matches in straight sets.

Purdue returns to action at Notre Dame on March 26.
