OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University Redhawks tallied a 7-2 victory over the Purdue baseball team in the first game of a three-game series Friday afternoon.
The Boilermakers (8-5) recorded eight hits in the game, but could only manage two runs, leaving eight runners on base. Right fielder Daniel Underwood went 2-for-4, with a double and scored the team's only two runs in the contest. Underwood scored on RBI doubles by senior Nick McIntyre in the fourth inning and junior Simon Klink in the eighth. McIntyre went 2-for-3 on the day.
Miami (7-9) scored two runs each in the third and sixth innings. The Redhawks' center fielder David Cook had a three-run double in the eighth to cap the scoring. The catcher John Slone went 3-for-4, scoring twice and drove in a run.
MU starter Sam Shorts (1-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits in seven and two thirds innings of action. Mitch Pruemer (2-1) gave up four runs on seven hits, while striking out six, in five and a third innings in the losing effort. Michael Gardner recorded the final four outs of the game for Miami for his second save of the season.
The series continues at 1 p.m. Saturday at McKie Field, before moving to West Lafayette for a 2 p.m. Sunday contest.
