WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team got back on the winning track with a dominating 7-0 victory at Texas-San Antonio on Thursday. The sweep was the Boilermakers' third of the season, after not recording a single sweep in all of 2002.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden was pleased with the performance, which came on the heels of a 4-3 loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday.

"This is a good win for us," Madden said. "We came out focused and got the job done. It really demonstrated how effective and successful we can be if we are mentally tough from start to finish."

The 49th-ranked Boilermakers got things started by winning all three matches in doubles. San Antonio native Scott Mayer, a senior, teamed with junior Troy Havens for a 9-8 win over Ricardo Almeida and Dennis Andrade at No. 1. Senior Andrew Wakefield and freshman Paul Rose won 8-5 at No. 2. At No. 3, junior Seth McKinley, who also hails from San Antonio, paired with sophomore Sounak Chatterjee to post an 8-5 victory.

Mayer won in straight sets at No. 1 singles over Jonas Hoglund. Wakefield also won in straight sets at No. 2. Havens needed three sets to dispatch Andrade at No. 3, but Rose, sophomore David Robinson and McKinley all finished in straight sets at No. 4, 5 and 6.

The victory moved Purdue to 7-4 (2-0 Big Ten), while the Roadrunners dropped to 5-7.

The Boilermakers will return home to resume their Big Ten schedule, as they host No. 12 Minnesota on Sunday, March 23. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m. Weather conditions will determine if the match is played at the Lafayette Sports Center or Varsity Tennis Courts.

Madden believes the Boilermakers, who upset the 20th-ranked Golden Gophers 4-3 last season, will be ready for the challenge this weekend.

"We're ready for Minnesota," Madden said. "We did a great job against them last season. I'm sure they'll be hungry for us, but we'll have to come out with a little more fire and energy. It should be a great match."
